With all the TALL DARK STRANGER and CAPTAINTREACHEROUS lots now through the ring at the 2023 Lexington Sales it’s safe to say that the multi-millionaire son of Bettors Delight has had an outstanding debut as a commercial sire. TALL DARK STRANGER over all had sixty lots presented to buyers which brought in a total of $5,549,000 – three of which sold for $300,000 or more including his top lot, colt Phantomofthenight which brought the hammer down at $350,000. Despite his two highest lots coming on day two, his average on the opener was in impressive $144,735! At the end of bidding, TALL DARK STRANGER had well over half of his lots bring $50,000 or more, twenty-three in $100,000+ territory. It’s a particularly pleasing result for his debut offering at the yearlings sales and we can’t wait to see his Australian and New Zealand drafts.
CAPTAINTREACHEROUS lots no longer surprise in terms of the good money they command but it was hard not to be edified by a new record set by the super sire, his daughter Treacheryinthedark fetching the record price ever paid for a pacing filly, the half-sister to STAY HUNGRY champion Seven Colors knocked down for an incredible $700,000. As always his fillies were in hot demand with seven of his top ten lots selling to those seeking a top race track proposition with the long term investment of a well-bred bloodline. All three of his $300,000+ lots were fillies, with his top colt coming in a number five – Aye Aye Hanover bringing $250,000. For the whole sale, CAPTAIN’s forty-eight lots brought in a total of $5,508,000 with an average of $114,750 (and a first day average of over $200,000!).
Stallions offered this season at Empire – TALL DARK STRANGER, CAPTAINTREACHEROUS and STAY HUNGRY lots totaled $11,430,000 at Lexington this year.
